Dritero Agolli (1931-2017)

Dritero Agolli is a well known writer and songwriter. Writer, publicist, social activist, member of the Academy of Sciences of Albania. He was born in Devil’s Menkulas. The first lessons he took at home, high school in “Asim Zeneli” (Gjirokaster), where he made the first literary trials. From 1952 to 1957 he attended high school studies at the Leningrad University Faculty of Literature. In 1957 – 1972 he works as a journalist and editor in the daily “Voice of the People” (see). From 1973 to 1992 he was chairman of the Albanian Writers ‘and Artists’ Association. Dritero Agolli is one of the central figures of Albanian poetry and one of the most prominent representatives of the “1960s generation”.

Dritero Agolli

Criticizing the traditionalist spirit and the rhetorical patriotism, Dritero Agolli brought poetry to sensuousness and new figuration by perpetuating the Albanian vernacular system. He is the poet of strong “unit” poetry. The tendency to self-denial seemed to be his first volume “On the Road I” (1958), but he clearly stated in the poems “Devoll-Devoll” and “Poem for the father and for himself”.

The poetry of Dritero Agolli does not divide the general from his own, does the synthesis of the collective with the individual. Dritero Agolli preserved the finest values of poetry of tradition – popular spirit. He created a new burial knife, following Naim, perceiving rejuvenation. His astonishingly poetic growth path is expressed in the books: “My steps in the asphalt” (1961), “Mountain and pavement trails” (1965), Devoll – Devoll (1964), “Noon” (1968) (1985), “The late Pelegrini” (1993), “The Time of the Lazy” (1995), “The Babylones” (1969), “Nene Shqiperi” (1974), “The Word Carved Stone” (1977) , “Midnight Flats” (1999). Dritero Agolli showed in poetry a personal view of the “great subject”, demanding the poetic magnitude of the ordinary subject’s perceptions; extending the space of reality into poetry and radically changing relationships between them.

This poem influenced in its entirety for a more literary climate in Albania. The creativity of Dritero Agolli in its essence is lirico – epic, unlike the traditional one, which was mainly held in the epic praise. Dritero Agolli took the Albanian poetry out of general concern about human distress. His poetry is covered by the cult of his birthplace, land, bread, parishion, family, parent, of the father. It is ruled by the living world, the spirit of the environment, the sanctification of nature, the ares and the cattle. This feature of his poetry shows traces of the Bektashi pantheistic expression. Dritero Agolli created in poems the image of an ideal Albania.

The most important and idealistic work is the poem “Mother Albania”. Throughout its centuries-old creative style, Dritero Agolli is the poet of human pain and philosophy of life. He is attentive to the great drama of the people, and he is also the poet of human personal pain. Dritero Agolli recognized a poetic revival in the last two decades. With the poetry poems “The late Pelegrini”, “The beggars of time”, “The Midnight Flats” the author announces his new challenge of mastery. In these poems, the poet is thrilled to find the value and meaning of his own life and of the generation he represents in the conditions of the great shocks of the society and of the radical changes of the road toward its future.

Dritero Agolli’s own poetry does not have any reversals associated with these changes. It is a poem of human values and distrust, poetry of pride and drama, of heightening and striking, of the nodding of the poetic moods and the fine. Dritero Agolli faced dignity the challenge to give deserved value to freedom.

The earliest piece in the prose of Dritero Agolli is the story of “The Wind of Winds” (1964), which was regretted by official criticism and was removed from circulation (1965). These stories, some of which were reprinted at the end of 1980 in the book “Crushed People”, are filled with non-personal characters. These heroes appear together with their cows by avoiding a scheme for the typical positive hero. The novel “Commemorative Memo” (1970) is the most prominent work of Dritero Agolli in prose. In it, the author poetized “the time of the commissars”, which was part of the cult of the anti-fascist war, which ruled for a long time the Albanian literature. The most complete figure of the novel is Commander Rrapo, which is part of the “crackling” type, which contains in its entirety the literature of Dritero Agolli. In the novel “The Man with the Ball” (1975) Dritero Agolli discovered another relationship, quite different from that of the “Generation of the Dead Army” of Ismail Kadare (see) as far as the Albanian man with the Armenian relationship is concerned. Lord and slave of the weapon, enchanted and scorned by it, the central character of the book makes strange and foolish of the most unbelievable. Although the novel takes on a theme from the war, its dramatic knot lies in the universal fact that the morale of a generation has come in contradiction with that of the previous generation.

The novel “Trendafil in Gote” (1980) was hosted by literary thought as a “rosa libera”. With this work Dritero Agolli tried to make another challenge in the letter, creating a character whose drama is found among some of the lovers. The most prominent literary output in Dritero Agolli’s prose is considered “The Excellence and Fall of Comrade Zylo” (1973). Chronicle of the unfortunate career of an official, the novel is at the same time a reflection of the inseparable position of his subordinate.

Product of each other, two main characters, Zyloja and Demka, as it happens in almost all humorous works, are the mirror of the ridiculous and sometimes dramatic bureaucratic function. The loop is an unlucky figure, whereby the goodness of the purpose becomes the loss of real sense of reality. Unlike many schematic bureaucrats that had flooded not only Albanian literature but also publicity, Zyloja is a drama bureaucrat. At the core of this work, as well as in the novel “The Ark of the Devil”, stands the antiskemism. The latter Dritero Agolli started to write in the early 1980s, to finish in the early 1990s. In the Albanian life, another sense of freedom had entered. The novel faced the new horizon of expectation. “The Ark of the Devil” is a scripture with disciple to discipline.

Dritero Agolli

It is a testimony to the fact that powerful personalities of Albanian literature have been cheaper than their creative method. Dritero Agolli placing in the center of his novel the search for a taboo, asking for the banned, appear with a degree of opinion found on state liberty. The writer reaches a high degree of freedom with the “novel in the novel”, with the “ark of the devil”, where the verpra is forbidden. It is called “Forbidden Jail”, a title that remembers the famous dissident novel by M. Kunderes “Shakaja”. At this stage of creative freedom Dritero Agolli realizes a work where there is no censure and autocensure. Some of the best works of Dritero Agolli have been under the ideological point of view of the official authorities.

The novel “The Excellence and Fall of Comrade Zylo”, which was part of the magazine “Hosteni”, was silently interrupted (in 1990 the author published the full version of the work). The “White Age” and “Second Face” dramas were also criticized for “ideological misconduct”. While for the novel “Deshtaku”, which brought to the readers a drama reality, was kept silent. Much of his works have been published in many foreign languages. He has been a Member of the Parliament and the Parliament of Albania for several legislatures (1974 – 2005). Dritero Agolli received the first prize of the Republic and was decorated with the Order of the “Nation’s Honor”.

The 85-year-old collapse of Albanian letters, Dritëro Agolli, died. The great writer passed away at the Sanatorium of Tirana, where he was hospitalized for 9 days after a severe long-lasting lung disease. His health condition had become very heavy lately, as much as breathing was accomplished through oxygen supply. The last three days the doctors had been trying to breathe, but the chronic plucking sickness, which had been tormenting for 20 years, did not allow them to return home. The writer was cured for at least a year at home refusing hospitalization.
