ASDRENI (1872-1947)

Asdreni is a well-known writer. Alexander Stavre Drenova, known in our literature with pseudonym Asdreni from those poets whose creativity is simultaneously two periods. His poetry has been written since the end of the Renaissance until the Independence period. The poet had a long creative life, about forty years.

Alexander Stavre Drenova

Asdreni was born in Drenova village of Korça in April 11,1872. He first taught in Korça. From the age of thirteen he went to the curbs, in Romania, where he went to high school, and later the faculty of political science, which he could not complete. In order to gain the bread and to continue the studies, the young man is forced to do all the hard work. It is linked to the patriotic movement of Bucharest Albanians and becomes one of its most prominent representatives. In 1900 he began publishing his first poems in print and becoming known as the young talent he promised. His poetry of this time has a characteristic character, but the young poet has not yet found his individuality, is under the influence of Naim. At the same time Asdreni published articles in advanced democratic and anti-feudal form. In 1904 he published the volume of “Sunbeam” poetry that would be expected well by the reader and the press and will be greeted by Çajupi with the enthusiastic words; “Now I believe that Naim bey did not die, that the place that left him empty you.”

Asdreni became one of the leaders of the patriotic movement among the Albanians of Romania. He opened an Albanian school in Kostanza for the children of Albanian expatriates, reflected in his writings the events of Albania, collected assistance for the Kosovo rebels, collaborated with Noli for the disengagement of the Albanian church by the Greek church, was Secretary of Bucharest’s presiding chair Ismail Qemali in the fall of 1912 and the immediate proclamation of Independence. Not so in vain in that year comes the second volume with Asdren’s poem “Dreams and tears” where his talent is fully displayed and brought a remarkable contribution to the Albanian Renaissance literature.
In 1914 Asdreni came home to help strengthen the national power, but, disappointed with the turbulence of this time, returned to Romania. He gladly received the Congress of Lushnja, echoed the burning flame of the Vlora war. After 1924 he withdrew from political life, expressing in silence his controversial attitude to the Zog regime. In fact, in his third volume of poem “The Monk Psalm” published in 1930, we find alluded to this attitude. His revolt Asdreni also poured over some of the remaining poems in manuscripts. But his frustration from social political reality was inspired by pessimistic poems or cold poems that are not just formalistic exercises. So we saw the moment, the decline in his creativity. On the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, Asdreni returned to Albania, was finding a very cold reception by the regime’s representatives. The poet went back to Romania to never return to his homeland. In the last years of life he prepared a volume “Kruja bells”.
Asdreni became known as a publicist, but was also the author of textbooks and translators. He also, in the first place, remains in our literature as a talented lyric poet.
In his poetry lyrical Asdreni is restored to all the topics of Renaissance poetry, giving it a more open-minded spirit. No, in no way, he mainly speaks of the hymns and get-togethers. Known are the “Flag over Bet” (1907), which after 1912 became our National Anthem, “Forward” verse, distinguished by a pathetic-oratory style, which expresses a fiery inner pathos. Versatile and dynamic, and at the same time simple verses, have a special communication force.
