Does South America seem too far? Make yourself comfortable and take off with us from your desk, train or anywhere you are reading these lines! we at Pbolo.com has collected for you a gallery with the greatest places on the South American continent , to encourage you – maybe – to really jump! If you keep an eye on flights and book at the right time , it’s not an impossible dream. Here is the best of South America!
1- Iguazu Falls (Argentina, Paraguay, Brazil)
If you really want to dive into a new South American trip, then do it in style. Under the name “Iguazu” there are 275 different waterfalls, which constitute one of the largest in the world (so large that runs along the border between the three countries of South America). The largest? A scary waterfall of 80 meters!
2- Praia Vermelha, Rio de Janeiro (Brazil)
The home of beach volleyball? Copacabana! But poor little Praia Vermelha defends herself. Take the cable car up to the Sugar Loaf to enjoy this magnificent view, even appreciated by 007 during his arm wrestling with Jaws in Moonraker.
3- Torres del Paine National Park (Chile)
Does this image make you think of the condor’s flight? Uh! In any case, one of the ideal places to experience the Andes in all their glory is the spectacular Torres del Paine National Park , one of the most beautiful parks in South America: massive glaciers, snow-capped mountains, towering peaks, pristine blue lakes, sparkling rivers crystalline and … blade !
4- Huacachina (Peru)
Huachina did not exist … well, not until 1930, when some Peruvians decided it would be a good idea to build a real desert oasis around the lake. Today this place attracts many tourists from all over South America and the world, all hopeful to meet the mythical siren who lives in the lake … try it too!
5- Sao Paulo (Brazil)
Finish under a bridge in Brazil? Better to walk on it! The Octavio Frias de Oliveira is one of the most interesting bridges of the entire South American continent. This is the only bridge in the world that has two curved slopes supported by a single concrete pole … dizzying stuff, hold on tight!
6- Salvador de Bahia (Brasile)
Capital of good humor , this mythical city is a real fun (and the rum has a good percentage in all this). The highlight of the calendar is the carnival , officially the biggest party on the planet (and South America, of course), when four million people meet for a week between dances, parties and of course plenty of alcohol … and then swear never to drink more.
7- Huayhuash (Peru)
Beautiful this picture, eh? You might think we gave it in Photoshop, but this great place in the Andes was rated as the second most beautiful trek in the world by National Geographic. Impressive, no?
8- Montevideo (Uruguay)
Go down to the sea to enjoy the sunset and appease your appetite with a massive sandwich with meat, eggs and vegetables (try the Uruguayan specialty, chivito , or “cholesterol bomb”, and let us know what happens). Weather in Montevideo is generally sub-tropical, but you may find snowfall in winter. Every season has its charm in a place like this!
9- Bogota (Colombia)
Ok, leave aside for a moment the reputation of Colombia of dangerous country … Visit Bogota and do not miss the historical part of the city, La Candelaria , and try to orient (we know it is huge) taking the cableway up Monte Monsserate . The show is unmissable!
10- Machu Picchu (Peru)
Well, we could not leave Machu Picchu out of the Best Of South America … or maybe yes? Naaaah! Take a jump around here, you can actually climb to the top of the hill and look out from there, but … you will not have to suffer from vertigo: essential requirement.
